My car looks like an accordion after this crash — any chance it's totaled?

So I got hit on my way home from work last Tuesday and honestly I don't even know how I drove away from it. The whole front passenger corner is basically folded inward and when my neighbor (who actually knows about cars) popped the hood he just went silent for a second and said "yeah, that's not good."

From what I could tell there's fluid dried all over one side of the engine bay, something that looks like it used to be a straight metal bar is now bent at like a 45-degree angle, and the radiator or whatever is right next to it is visibly cracked. Oh and the front wheel on that side sits at a weird angle now when the car is parked — like it's tired and leaning.

The adjuster is coming out on Friday to do an estimate and I genuinely cannot tell if I should be hoping it's totaled or hoping it's repairable. Part of me just wants to be done with it and get a check, but then I realize the payout might not cover what I'd need to actually replace it.

I also have a really stiff neck and some shoulder pain that started the day after — went to urgent care and they said soft tissue but recommended follow-up with my regular doctor.

Has anyone been through an inspection like this? Did the adjuster's estimate match reality, or did they lowball the damage? And does the way the wheel is sitting mean what I think it means structurally? I know nothing about cars, clearly 😅

That bent wheel angle is what got me. Same thing happened with mine after a side impact — turns out it was a bent control arm AND damage to the subframe, and once they got into it the repair estimate climbed way past what the car was worth. Adjuster ended up totaling it. Fingers crossed for you honestly, because dealing with a "repaired" frame car is its own headache.

  Please please please get your own independent estimate from a body shop before you take whatever number the adjuster hands you. Their job isn't to be your advocate. Get at least two outside opinions and document EVERYTHING — every photo, every text, every conversation.

Full disclosure I used to work on the claims side, so take this for what it's worth. When a wheel is sitting off-camber like that after a collision it almost always means suspension or structural involvement — and those repair costs add up fast. Adjusters are required to write what they see, but here's the thing: the initial estimate is almost never the final number. Shops find hidden damage constantly once they start tearing things apart. If the repair cost hits a certain percentage of your car's actual cash value, the company will total it. Just know that the ACV they quote you can sometimes be negotiated — don't assume their first number is gospel.

Hey — don't brush off that neck and shoulder pain, okay? Soft tissue injuries from crashes can feel manageable on day two and then really flare up by day five or six as inflammation sets in. Follow up with your doctor like they said, and if they offer imaging, take it. Your medical records from right after the accident matter a lot if this turns into any kind of claim.

Not legal advice, but two things worth knowing: the at-fault party's insurance owes you for the actual cash value of your vehicle AND any loss of use while it's out of commission. On the injury side — and I know urgent care said soft tissue — make sure you're not settling anything medically related until you actually know how you're going to feel in a few weeks. Settling too early is one of the most common mistakes people make. Just something to keep in mind.

Totaled or not, you need three things right now: all your photos backed up somewhere, a rental car lined up (ask the other driver's insurance — they owe it to you), and a follow-up doctor appointment scheduled. Deal with the car stress after those boxes are checked.

Quick question — was the other driver found at fault already, or is that still being sorted out? And do you have your own collision coverage? The process and your options are pretty different depending on whose insurance you're dealing with here.
