I caused the accident and the other driver is seriously hurt — what happens to me now?
I don't even know how to start this. Two weeks ago I ran a stop sign and hit another car. I genuinely thought the road was clear — I misjudged the speed of the oncoming vehicle completely. It wasn't reckless, it wasn't intentional, but it happened and I can't take it back.
The other driver was taken away by ambulance. I've since heard through the grapevine that he has some kind of serious spinal injury. I feel absolutely sick about it every single day.
The officer on scene cited me for failure to yield resulting in injury. I'm 22, in school, working part-time, zero prior record of anything. No substances involved, no phone, just a genuinely terrible lapse in judgment at an intersection I've driven through dozens of times.
I called my insurance the same day and reported everything honestly. They opened a claim. My coverage is decent but I honestly don't know if it's enough given how bad his injuries sound.
Here's what I'm scared about:
- Will I face criminal charges on top of the traffic citation?
- Could I be personally sued even if insurance pays out?
- Is my license automatically gone?
- What does this do to my future — background checks, jobs, all of that?
I know I need a lawyer for myself, not just for the injured guy's sake. I'm just spiraling and trying to understand what the process even looks like from here. Has anyone been on my side of something like this? I'm not sleeping. I genuinely hope this person makes a full recovery more than anything.
