Got clipped on the highway, zero damage, driver sped off — do I even need to report this?
So this happened yesterday morning during my commute. I was merging onto the interstate and a pickup in the next lane just... drifted into me. Side of my bumper kissed their passenger door area. Both of us kind of jerked apart and I immediately slowed down and pulled toward the shoulder expecting them to do the same.
They did not. They just accelerated and disappeared into traffic.
I got off at the next exit and walked around my car for like ten minutes in a gas station parking lot. Couldn't find so much as a scratch. No paint transfer, nothing. I felt fine physically — a little shaky from adrenaline but no pain anywhere.
Called the non-emergency police line and the officer I spoke to basically said without damage or injury there's nothing to file. He suggested I just move on with my day.
So now I'm sitting here wondering:
1. Do I call my insurance and tell them anyway? I'm scared of my rates going up for something that wasn't my fault and left zero damage. 2. Is there any realistic chance the other driver files a claim against ME? Like, could they invent some story and come after my insurance? 3. Should I have pushed harder for a police report even if they didn't want to take one?
I know this is probably a non-issue but the "what if that driver makes something up" scenario is living in my head rent-free. I didn't get their plate either which I'm kicking myself about. Anyone dealt with something similar where you just had to decide whether to report or let it go?
