How do I even find a decent accident attorney? Every search result is just ads

Hey everyone, hoping someone here has been through this and can point me in the right direction.

About three weeks ago I got rear-ended on my way to an early shift. I was sitting in slow-moving traffic on a surface road — totally stopped, brake lights on — and the truck behind me just didn't slow down in time. Hit me hard enough that my car got shoved into the vehicle in front of me, so now I'm somehow sandwiched in a two-vehicle collision even though I didn't touch anyone.

I walked away feeling mostly fine, just rattled. But over the next few days I started getting this dull ache in my neck and upper shoulders that won't quit. Went to urgent care and they said it could be soft tissue stuff and to follow up if it lingers. It's lingering. I've got a second appointment scheduled but I'm already dreading what the treatment plan is going to look like.

Meanwhile the other driver's insurance adjuster has called me twice and left voicemails asking me to give a recorded statement. I haven't called back yet because something feels off about the urgency — like why do they need a recording so fast?

I work a physical job so the neck thing is actually affecting my ability to do my shifts properly. My boss is being understanding for now but that's not going to last forever.

I want to at least consult with a personal injury attorney before I say anything to the adjuster. But every time I search I get a wall of paid ads and it's impossible to tell who's actually good versus who just has the biggest marketing budget.

How did you all find someone you trusted? Word of mouth? Bar referrals? Just picking someone and hoping? Any advice appreciated.

Do NOT call that adjuster back without talking to a lawyer first. That recorded statement is not for your benefit — it's so they can use your own words against you later when they're trying to lowball your claim. The urgency is a tactic. They want to lock in your statement before your symptoms fully develop and before you know what your medical bills are going to look like.

Also look for attorneys who specifically list motor vehicle accidents as a focus, not just general personal injury. Most offer free consultations so you can talk to two or three before committing. That first call is just a conversation, no pressure.

Please don't brush off the neck and shoulder symptoms. Soft tissue injuries from rear-end collisions can take weeks to fully declare themselves, and if you're doing physical work you might be aggravating things without realizing it. Keep a simple daily log — pain level, what movements bother you, how it affects your work. That documentation can matter a lot later, both medically and for your claim.

Not legal advice, but — the recorded statement concern is valid. You generally have no obligation to give one to the other party's insurer, and doing so before you understand the full scope of your injuries is risky. The sandwich situation (you getting pushed into a car ahead of you) can also complicate liability questions, which is another reason to have someone in your corner before you start making statements. Most PI attorneys work on contingency so the consult costs you nothing.

Stop Googling 'best attorney' — that's just SEO bait. Ask people you actually know. A friend, a family member, a coworker. Someone you trust who went through something similar. One good word-of-mouth rec is worth more than a hundred five-star reviews you can't verify.

The part about your job worrying you is what got me. You shouldn't have to stress about whether your boss stays understanding while you're also dealing with insurance and doctor visits and all of this at once. I really hope you find someone to help take some of that weight off. You didn't ask to be in this situation.

Quick question — did the police come to the scene? Is there an official report? And do you know for sure the truck behind you is fully at fault, or is there any question about the circumstances? Just asking because the multi-car piece can get complicated depending on what's documented. Worth knowing before you go into any attorney consult.
