Lost my title and insurance wants it ASAP — can the DMV get me one same day?

So my car got totaled about three weeks ago when someone ran a red light and T-boned me. I've been dealing with the whole claims process and honestly it's been exhausting. Now the adjuster is telling me they need the title before they can finalize the payout, and I just realized I have no idea where mine is.

I've torn apart my filing cabinet, checked every folder, even looked through old moving boxes — nothing. I finally just called my state DMV and scheduled an appointment for a duplicate title, but now I'm worried it's not going to come through in time.

A few things I'm unsure about:

Does the DMV hand you the duplicate title on the spot, or do they mail it and you wait weeks?
Should I call my adjuster ahead of time and let them know what's going on, or will that slow things down or raise flags somehow?
Has anyone had to push back a settlement closing because of a missing title? Did the insurance company give you a hard time about it?

I really just want to get this wrapped up. My rental coverage is running out soon and I need the payout to put toward a replacement vehicle. Any advice from people who've been through this would be genuinely helpful. I feel like every time I think I'm at the finish line there's another hoop to jump through. 😩

Went through almost the exact same thing last year. At my DMV they do NOT give it to you same day — they mail it, and it took about 10 business days to show up. I'd call your adjuster now and give them a heads up. Mine actually appreciated it and noted the file, which bought me a little extra time on the rental. Don't just show up Tuesday and then scramble.

Don't let time pressure make you agree to something you're not satisfied with. The title situation is fixable — the settlement number is harder to revisit once you sign.

Worked in auto claims for years. Adjusters deal with missing titles more often than you'd think — it's not some red flag that slows your claim down if you're upfront about it. What DOES slow things down is when people just go quiet and then the title never shows. Call them today, explain you've scheduled the duplicate request, and ask if they can document an extension on your file. Most carriers have a process for this. Also ask specifically whether they'll accept a 'duplicate title application receipt' as a placeholder while you wait for the actual document — some will.

Not legal advice, but one thing worth knowing: if your rental coverage lapses while you're waiting on the title paperwork, document everything — dates, calls, what the adjuster said. If the delay is on their end or they're being unreasonable about timing, that paper trail matters. Just protect yourself throughout the process.
