Predatory tow truck showed up out of nowhere after my wreck — now I'm drowning in storage fees
I'm 20 years old and this was my first ever accident, so I had no idea what I was walking into. A pickup clipped me pretty hard on the highway last month — wasn't my fault at all, the other driver even admitted it to the officer on scene.
Within like five minutes of pulling over, a tow truck just... appeared. The driver was super friendly, said he'd get my car somewhere safe, and I was so shaken up I just said okay. Nobody told me this place charges by the day for storage. Nobody handed me a rate sheet. I found out what they charge when I finally got the written estimate — and by that point my car had been sitting there for almost three weeks.
The repair quote itself felt off to me. I'm not a mechanic but my cousin is, and some of the line items looked weird to her when I read them over the phone. When I asked the shop if she could come look at the car with me, they basically said no and got really cagey about it. That alone made me feel like something shady is going on.
Meanwhile the storage fees are stacking up every single day. My car loan payments are still due. The other driver's insurance keeps stalling and mine says this might not be covered the way I thought.
I've tried calling the shop to negotiate and they won't budge. I've tried calling both insurance companies and I just get bounced around. I still owe a lot on this car and I'm scared I'm going to lose it entirely over something that wasn't even my fault.
Has anyone dealt with a situation like this? What actually helped you get out from under it?
