Predatory tow truck showed up out of nowhere after my wreck — now I'm drowning in storage fees

Oh my god this is almost exactly what happened to me two years ago. Those tow trucks that show up immediately are called 'chase trucks' and they are NOTORIOUS for this. The storage fees are how they make their real money. I learned way too late that you can often demand your car be moved to a different facility — call your insurance and push hard on that specific point. The fees may already be negotiable down if you get the right person involved.

The other driver's insurance is stalling on purpose. Every day that passes is another day they hope you get desperate enough to accept whatever lowball offer they eventually make. Don't give them a recorded statement without understanding your rights first. And document EVERY phone call — date, time, name of rep, what was said. That paper trail matters more than people realize.

I used to work claims and I can tell you that storage fee situations like this are a known headache. Here's something most people don't know: insurers can sometimes dispute 'unreasonable' storage fees and get them reduced, but they won't do it unless you push them. Ask your adjuster specifically what their policy is on excess storage and get it in writing. Also — the fact that the shop won't let you or a third party inspect your own vehicle is a serious red flag. That's your property.

A few practical things worth knowing: in most states, you have the right to retrieve your personal belongings from the vehicle regardless of any lien the shop claims. Also, shops that hold vehicles have to follow specific lien and notice procedures before they can do anything drastic — if they skipped any of those steps, that could work in your favor. This doesn't mean ignore the situation, but you may have more time and leverage than it feels like right now.

How are YOU doing physically? People get so focused on the car and the money stress — understandably — but if you haven't been checked out by a doctor since the accident, please go. Adrenaline masks a lot right after a crash and symptoms can show up days or even weeks later. Make sure any medical visits are documented as accident-related.

Call your state's Department of Consumer Affairs or your state Attorney General's consumer protection line and ask specifically about towing and storage regulations. Most states have caps or disclosure rules these guys are supposed to follow. If they violated them, you have a complaint to file — and that complaint can sometimes magically make shops more willing to negotiate.

Please don't try to handle it alone — is there a parent, older family member, or anyone who could help you make calls or go with you to deal with these people in person? Having another adult present changes the dynamic sometimes.

Quick question — did you sign anything at the scene when the tow truck took your car? Or at the shop when it arrived? Whatever you signed might spell out their rates even if they didn't verbally disclose them. Not saying it makes what they're doing okay, just that knowing exactly what's in those documents would help clarify what your options actually are.
